Tata Motors, a commercial vehicle manufacturer, and Castrol India Limited have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to launch a pilot programme focused on creating a used oil circularity ecosystem in India. The initiative aims to establish a structured model for the responsible collection, channelization and recycling of used engine oil, supporting India’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework and broader circular economy goals.
Under the programme, Tata Motors’ authorised sales and service touchpoints across Karnataka will serve as structured collection points for used engine oil. The companies will build a traceable system covering collection, storage and channelization, with Castrol India anchoring the transfer of collected oil to registered recyclers.
Tata Motors’ Head–Spares and Non-Vehicle Business, Vikram Agrawal, said responsible used-oil management is important to developing a circular automotive ecosystem. He said the partnership aims to connect collection at service locations with high-quality re-refined output and represents part of Tata Motors’ wider sustainability efforts.
Castrol India Vice President–B2B (OEM) Sales, Anoop Jindal, said collaboration across the lubricant value chain is necessary to establish a circular economy. He described the initiative as Castrol India’s first OEM collaboration focused on creating a structured used-oil management ecosystem in India.
Castrol will draw on insights from its existing used-oil collection pilots in southern India to address challenges in scaling circularity. Combined with Tata Motors’ extensive service network, the companies aim to develop a more organised, traceable and scalable model for used-oil management, supporting responsible recycling and reuse across India’s automotive lubricant value chain. .
